Can I store a file under /var/tmp location? Will it get deleted?

I give up.
Can you?
most likely the answer is "YES".

[oracle@localhost ~]$ ls -ld /var/tmp
drwxrwxrwt 3 root root 4096 Jun 18 2012 /var/tmp

>Will it get deleted?
It depends.

As Blackswan said, it depends. An administrator could have put clearing down /var/tmp in a startup script and/or cron job. Why do you ask? And why not ask your Systems Administrator?

Any reason why they won't talk to you? Anyway, why don't you put a test file there and leave it and see what happens?

I do not want to play in the production box. At home, I am trying to install oracle on ubuntu linux on oracle virtualbox. Once I successfully am done with the installation of all the three, I will be able to play around.

To what end?
Is your "production" box Ubuntu? No, you said it was Solaris. Solaris and Ubuntu have very little in common.

Will you know how to set up and configure this box the same way your SA's do your production boxes?
No, for two reasons. First, as mentioned, Ubuntu is not Solaris. Second, by your own admission you don't know how your Solaris box is configured.

You said "Here they won't answer my questions."
That is a very serious issue. SA's and DBA's should "be in bed" with each other. Inability for a DBA to work with an SA is an issue that should be, must be, addressed. I don't care if it's personality conflict, if you've done something to cause them write you off (justly or unjustly), if they are just inherently insular, or what. But whatever it is, if you consider yourself a professional you need to get to the bottom of it one way or another.
