I had the same problem. 8i does not work with the kernel for 7.2 and there is a work around using 6.2's kernel but it was easier for me to install 9i which does not have this problem. However 9i stalls at 11% each time I try...I cannot figure out what is wrong. Oracle press just published oracle 8i for linux starter kit which tells you how to do it step by step on 6.2. It is a good book but 6.2 does not recognize my hardware. On 7.2 I created the operating system groups, created the oracle user, created oracle base location and set the oracle user environment. I downloaded JDK and think that maybe it is not installed properly..the OUI runs and then at 11% my computer just freezes up...any suggestions are welcome.

If your trouble looks like this message:

http://www.orafaq.net/msgboard/unix/messages/691.htm

then perhaps its solutions works with yours, even when that note talks about 9i

From the Topics Menu:
Oracle -> DBA Tips -> Tips #53 and #54

Hope this helps. -- jeff
