i'm new forgive me...
but i can't seem to find out how to change the color
of the files or dirs. , can you change both or just
one or neither, is this a linux thing?

Yes, it's linux thing. Linux version of 'ls' prints out color code depending on your term type - either using termcap or terminfo , so that your terminal emulator such as xterm can recognize the colors for the string - i.e. file names or directory names.
