when i perform identical installation on two nodes,
do i have to use the same SID on both nodes?

Yes. In a cluster environment the failover has to be able to identify the database so it must have the same name. The database will only be running on the logical host but that logical host can run on either physical host. Your oratab file should be identical on both physicals hosts. You will also have the same initSID.ora in both $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directories. Bottom line is it is the SAME database and must be for it to work.
