I am hoping all you experts can shed some light into this issue.

When execute "/sbin/start_udev", my putty window (network) is disconnected and can no longer ssh into the box. From another Linux box, I can continue to ssh into the box, but not from my window (client box).

Any insights or pointers are appreciated

Realize that your problem & solution have NOTHING to do with Oracle database or RAC.
/sbin/start_udev is just a script.
You can gain visibility WRT what occurs inside it by doing a 1 line modification.
Near the top of the script after line #1 add the line below
set -x
Then invoke it again.
It will display each line as that line gets executed.
You can capture everything using the "script" command; such as doing below before invoking /sbin/start_udev after modifying it.

script capture.lis

The "script" command is terminated by issuing Ctrl-D
